As a brief interlude in my posting of my great grandfather George Charles Champion's letters home from Central America in 1879, today's entry features a series of photographs taken by Eadweard Muybridge four years earlier, in 1875. Unfortunately I did not have these pictures with me during my recent visit to Panama, but some of the views I took were uncannily similar to those taken by Muybridge....had I had his images with me, I would have tried to position myself even closer to the exact spots from which he had taken his shots, but even without them, the comparisons are striking. There are several more to come, but here are a first few:
The reception held for Muybridge in front of the cathedral, Panama, 1875
Panama City from the parade ground, 1875
Panama city from the promenade
Casco Antiguo from Cerro Ancon, Panama
Mouth of the Chagres river from Fort San Lorenzo
